Roderick A. Garcia DMD and Dental Implants

Dental ImplantsDental Implants what are they and how are they used to help our dental patients.

Dental Implants have been around a long time and are used to replace missing teeth in the upper and lower jaws. Dental Implants today are very advanced in their engineering both biologically and structurally. The Dental Implants we use today are made of either titanium or ceramic and are coated with materials which allows bone to integrate rapidly ( attach ) to the dental implant. Dental Implants come in different lengths and shapes.

All Dental Implants are placed in bone where a tooth or teeth need to be replaced. Dental Implants can usually be placed in an hour or less with minimal discomfort and sometimes the dental implant can be placed at the same time the tooth is extracted.

Bone healing around the dental implant usually takes 3 months at which time the crown, crowns, or bridge is impressioned for fabrication and sent to a dental lab. The dental lab will fabricate the implant abutment (connects to the dental implant and the restoration) and the implant restoration ( crown or bridge ) in 2 weeks. A temporary restoration may or not be placed depending on the dental implant location in the mouth and dental cosmetic considerations.

Dental implants are the state of the art for tooth replacement at this time and have a great prognosis for long term stability. We will discuss different types of implant restorations in a future dental article.
