4 New Smile Options

There is no question; cosmetic dentistry is growing in popularity. Several reality shows have given an inside view of how a dentist can convert almost anyone's teeth and give them a smile they love. The dentist will be able to help determine which option will be best suited in brightening that smile.

What are common cosmetic dental options used to improve a smile?

Four Popular Procedures

Cosmetic Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening does not have the exact health benefits or functional as other cosmetic treatments, but it is still one of the most favored services. Teeth whitening treatments use bleaching gels that assist in lifting stains and removing discoloration from the surface of the teeth. The procedure occurs in a dental clinic, or the dentist can prepare a take-home kit to use.

Take-home kits often include a whitening gel and a tray that holds the teeth for a specified time. Depending on how much whitening a person desires, the patient should see results after one to two weeks.

The dentist will examine the mouth during the initial appointment and advise if whitening is necessary. Bleaching is not valid on all types of discoloration, and the yellow stains might be a sign of a serious underlying issue. That is why it is good to talk to a dentist even if over-the-counter treatment is a possibility.

Cosmetic Dental Veneers

Veneers are a thin shell made from a composite or porcelain material. Veneers are uniquely developed and cement to the front side of the tooth. Veneers are a way to treat dental conditions such as a crooked tooth, discolored teeth, chipped teeth or even to cover spaces in between the teeth.

Implants

Dental implants are a metal device created to replace missing teeth. The device consists of titanium and is surgically put into the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Unlike a dental bridge, an implant is not movable; it is permanent. A dental implant is created to act as the tooth root and can anchor an artificial tooth or teeth such as a bridge, denture or crowns.

Crowns

Crowns, also referred to as caps, are custom made to fit over the entire tooth. These appliances consist of porcelain or acrylic that has been fused to metal to withstand biting pressure. Crowns can be used in cosmetic dentistry to correct teeth that are severely decayed, broken, poorly shaped, chipped, have had large fillings or to cover spaces between teeth.

Regardless of the underlying cause, the dentist can instruct ways to alter both the function and look of a smile. Do not be nervous to discuss crowns or other options with your dentist. Crafting your new smile can be fun!

Consult the dentist to go over what your needs are and which procedure is best. Your dental insurance might not cover cosmetic dentistry, so you may have an out-of-pocket expense for these procedures. That could be a factor in which method works best for you.
