Do I Need a Dental Crown After a Root Canal?

Looking for more information on what a dental crown is because you think root canal therapy is in your near future? A dental crown is often placed over a tooth that has recently undergone a root canal. But, this is not always the case. The reason a dentist will decide to use a dental crown after a root canal is to give the tooth more strength.

A tooth that is in need of a root canal is already damaged. Because the root canal process removes the pulp, it is possible for the tooth to become even weaker. When a dental crown is placed over the tooth, the patient can feel confident that their tooth is once again strong. Thus, they can be used without worrying about further dental problems.

According to the American Dental Association, a crown restores a tooth to its normal shape, size and function because the purpose of a crown is to make the tooth stronger or improve the way it looks.

About root canals

A root canal is necessary to save a damaged tooth. When a tooth undergoes some type of trauma, like being fractured in a car accident, it is now susceptible to bacteria getting inside. This is because the outside of the tooth is no longer protecting the inside of the tooth. It is also possible for a tooth to have much decay that the integrity of the tooth is compromised. Thus, it needs a root canal performed in order to save it. It is always better to have a root canal performed to save a tooth instead of losing the tooth and needing to find a replacement option.

According to the American Dental Association, when someone has a severely damaged tooth, decay or a serious tooth infection, then a dentist may recommend root canal treatment to repair and save the tooth instead of removing it.

Is a dental crown necessary after a root canal?

A dental crown is often used to protect a weak tooth from becoming further damaged. Another option is to place a filling in the treated tooth. But, this option is recommended for a tooth that only needs a little reinforcement to remain strong. Additional reasons a dentist may recommend a dental crown after one of their patients undergo a root canal include the following:

  • To protect the tooth from sensitivity to hot and cold
  • To protect the tooth from becoming infected again
  • For cosmetic reasons

Do you need to schedule a consultation appointment?

Would you benefit from getting a dental crown over your tooth after having a root canal performed? The only way you are sure to know whether or not a dental crown after your root canal is necessary is after the procedure has been performed. This is when the dentist can fully evaluate the new condition of the tooth and accordingly determine whether or not a dental crown is actually needed.

If you are ready to schedule a consultation appointment for more information or are actually ready to undergo the root canal procedure, know that we are looking forward to hearing from you so you can get the process started.
