Periodontal Disease and What It Means To You

Periodontal Scaling

Cosmetic and Family Dentist Roderick Garcia DMD has helped his patients achieve optimal oral health since 1983. Included in the dental services Dr. Garcia provides is periodontal(gum) scaling, root planing and periodontal maintenance.

What is periodontal scaling and root planing? Periodontal scaling and root planing is a dental procedure that allows the dentist or dental hygienist to clean off and remove all dental calculus (tartar) under the gum line that is attached and adhered to the root surface. This calculus (tartar) is loaded with bacteria and not only causes gum swelling and infection but also bone loss.

Periodontal disease is a condition requiring periodontal scaling and root planing. Periodontal disease has been linked to diabetes, heart and kidney disease,Alzheimer's, asthma, osteoporosis and cancer. Obviously periodontal disease is a serious condition that not only causes loss of teeth and infection, but also has medical implications as well.

Periodontal disease can be resolved and oral heath maintained through scaling, root planing and periodontal maintenance visits.

Sometimes periodontal surgery is required to resolve periodontal disease issues.
