A dentist may advise their patients to get a dental crown to replace old or worn-out fillings. A dental filling is often used to treat a small to medium-sized region of dental decay. Even though fillings are designed to last for a long time, they might fail or fall out for various reasons, such as…
The Dental Crowns Process
Dental crowns are protective coverings that are placed over teeth by dentists. A crown can protect a tooth and restore its function when it has been significantly damaged. The crown can also be used for cosmetic reasons. A crown also referred to as a tooth cap, is customized to cover your tooth.
Crowns are made from a variety of materials. Composite resin, metal alloys, porcelain, or ceramics may be used. Several steps are often involved in placing a crown. Most times, it takes two dental visits to complete the treatment.
Dental crown procedure
To prepare the tooth, the dentist will remove its outer portion so that the crown can fit comfortably. This will create enough room for the crown to be placed. Any decay will be removed, and if more tooth structure is needed to support the crown, the provider will build up the tooth’s core. The dentist will make an impression of the tooth to provide a model for the crown. This impression will be sent to the dental lab where the crown will be made.
It often takes about two weeks to get the final crown from the dental lab after the impression is sent. It is not good to leave the tooth uncovered over that period. This is why the dentist will place a temporary crown during the initial visit. At the second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed before the dentist places the new crown in the mouth. The dentist will make the necessary adjustments and then cement the crown in place.
Just like natural teeth, normal brushing helps to care for temporary dental crowns. When flossing, the floss should be pulled out from the side of the tooth rather than snapping it back upward. This is not ideal because it could dislodge the crown. If the temporary crown breaks or comes off while waiting for the permanent one, the patient should call the dentist. The dentist may either re-glue it or make a new one for the patient.
Once the permanent crown is installed, it is important to take good care of it. Practicing good oral hygiene is also crucial. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing every day will help to keep the teeth and gums healthy. An individual should see the dentist or hygienist frequently for professional cleanings and checkups. A person should also refrain from chewing hard foods, ice, or any other hard objects that could damage a crown.

The dental crown procedure helps to restore a tooth’s shape and size. It can also enhance its performance or increase its strength. To prevent damage to a crown and to ensure its longevity, it is vital to exercise good oral hygiene and to avoid chewing on things that could damage it. If you are thinking about getting dental crowns, schedule an appointment with your dentist to learn more about what the process involves. Your dentist can help you determine whether this treatment option is ideal for you.
