The Process of Periodontal Surgery

Periodontal Surgery

Roderick A. Garcia DMD an Albuquerque Cosmetic and Family Dentist, has operated his private dental practice for over 30 years.

At Dr. Roderick A. Garcia's a wide range of dental procedures are offered to his patients including, Periodontal Surgery.

Periodontal Surgery is gum surgery that is required when periodontal ( gum ) pockets are deep, bone loss around teeth is present, attached tissue around the tooth is thin, excess gum tissue is present, frenum attachments need to be removed or repositioned or bone grafting around a tooth is needed to support or save it.

Periodontal surgery is usually done in an hour or less with minimal discomfort and healing time is 3 weeks to 3 months depending on the surgical procedure provided. Most patients are able to return to work the same or next day.

Before Periodontal surgery occurs, a complete dental exam and a full series of x-rays is done and all periodontal scalings are performed to remove all calculus (tarter) on the root surface of the teeth present.

Once healing occurs after the periodontal surgery, the patient will have more stability of the teeth and gums and better access to the teeth and gum surfaces to better clean and maintain proper oral health.

In order to maintain this new periodontal health, dental cleanings will need to be done every 3 months.
