Why Every Guy You Know Should Visit the Dentist This Year

DentistIf you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, it is time to come back.  Your oral health can influence more than how your teeth feel.  Research has found that the health of your teeth and gums influence other areas of your body as well, and in order to ensure that you don’t have any dental emergencies or avoidable health issues, we suggest having your teeth cleaned at least twice a year. Understanding that men tend to visit the dentist less often than women, we wanted to know why.  The Academy of General Dentistry wanted to know as well and conducted a poll of both dental professionals and patients to get the scoop.  What they found was rather interesting.  A common assumption is that most people don’t have their teeth cleaned because they don’t have dental insurance or access to a good dentist.  This is actually not the primary reason.  According to their research, only 5 percent of men didn’t have their teeth cleaned because of this.  The number one reason for not coming in was simply because they didn’t think that they needed to.  In our mind that speaks to an education issue and with that, here is why you should visit our office for a teeth cleaning –The majority of adults will lose one or more of their teeth. If you want to keep your smile intact, it is important to focus on preventative oral health care.  It is easier to lose teeth that you may think.  If you have a small infection, and it goes untreated, this could lead to bone loss and eventual tooth loss.  The same applies to advanced gum disease.  In order to increase your chances of keeping your teeth, you should practice a good oral hygiene routine at home and have your teeth cleaned in our dental office.Gum disease is more dangerous than you may think. Most people that hear the term gum disease think about red and swollen gums.  This is true, and a common symptom, but there is more to it than this.  When gum disease advances, it leads to gum recession where pockets are created in the gum tissue.  Plaque and bacteria can gather in these pockets, and acid will begin to attack the teeth and roots, as a result.  Many people experience bone loss and eventual tooth loss due to gum disease. If this wasn’t enough of an issue, researchers have found that the majority of people treated for a heart condition also have gum disease.  On top of this, they have found that the plaque on your teeth is the same substance as the plaque that can clog your arteries.  Since everything in your mouth will eventually be swallowed, it must be considered that when you have plaque buildup you could be putting your heart at risk.  Given that 1.5 million people have a heart attack every year, this is not a worthwhile risk and something that can be avoided with bi-annual trips to our dentist office for a teeth cleaning.
